HINDSIGHT BIAS IN INVESTMENT

“You didn’t know it all along, you just think you did”
---James Montier

According to Pompian (2006), hindsight bias is the impulse that insists: “I knew it all along”. Briefly, this is tendency that people believe any situation predictable when it happened. That is, people think to predict correctly after outcomes of events.

Hindsight bias can be related to minds of people. Thus, it can be explained by neuroscience. Minds of people have strong actual memory so they tend to know more actual outcomes than past outcomes. That is, people are more prone to recall actual outcomes than past predictions.

According to some academic papers, hindsight bias is similarly defined as “individuals, after receiving outcome information, claim to have “known it all along”. Strength of hindsight bias is observed individual attitudes, the plausibility of additional information, and information made available to subjects. For example, if a trader has much additional information or feedback information, this can decrease hindsight bias. Hindsight bias can be observed in stock prices. For example, I choose CCOLA (Coca Cola) stock. I predicted five days closing price and five days average closing prices. After a period of time, if my predictions’ deviations are high from initial prices, I have a hindsight bias. That is, people who have hindsight bias is close to actual.

Pohl, Bender and Lachmann (2002) states that many researcher think hindsight bias as cognitive process. That is, hindsight bias is occurred from individual differences. They question whether hindsight bias is occurred from cognitive process or not and whether it has cultural differences or not. According to them, hindsight bias includes basic features of cognitive process so this should be same in every culture. With respect to result, it is founded that “hindsight bias is caused by basic cognitive process that are not influenced by culturally ways of thinking”. That is, their thought are supported by result.

S.Korea Economic Revolution ( Economic and Financial Analysis btw 1999-2007 )

1)  Economical Description

Korea has huge success within 15 years and is developing rapidly. Especially current account balance of Korea have been surplus for long times. And this has given advantage to Korea in order to grow up rapidly.
Within 15 years, GDP of Korea has increased due to foreign direct investment and export. These indicators have huge share of GDP of Korea. And high inflation was declined significantly. Wealth of Korean people went up.
Korea has increased their export since 1970. Export/ GDP ratio of Korea was 34% in 1978. The country has saved their surplus and saving ratio was very high for long years. Ship construction and textile sectors were main sectors for Korea and Korea used surpluses of these sectors in automobile and electronic sectors. And it created world famous brand in these sectors such as Hyundai and LG.
Moreover, education and usage of technology contributed success in development of Korea. 98% of people studied at university. Also internet usage ratio of people was 75 %.

2) Time Series Analysis
     2.1) Current Account
     Trade Balance
     Export
In 1999, there is not significant change as export increased 9 % during 1998-1999 years. In 2000, export increased 21 %. This increase was thanks to brisk exports of semiconductor, information and communication equipments. In 2001, export fell down 14 %. Countries which had economic downturn including major partners such as United States and slow commodity exports led to decrease of export. In 2002, there is no significant change in export after one year. In 2003, export had great increase by 20%. Rising export to China and advanced export to EU and US during last four months resulted in boost. In 2004, Korea had the biggest soar by 30% over 1999-2008. As boosted commodity export to China and acceleration in economic growth of advanced countries, especially US, export raised importantly .In 2005, Export of Korea had slower growth rate because of base period effect. In 2006, export improved 14% as global economy trended upward. In 2007, boosted export to emerging countries such as China and developed competitiveness on Korean products resulted in increase by 14%.
     Import
In 1999, Import moved higher due to increases in capital goods from Japan and oil from Arabic countries. In 2000, Import of Korea has the biggest increase over 1998-2007 since boost rate was 37% in a year. Raised import demand, especially capital goods, and increase in number of Korean travelling abroad resulted in increases. In 2001, Korea experienced single drop in this year over 1997-2008. Global economy was affected by 11 September devastation. Import of goods fell down 13% because of decreasing capital goods demand and raw materials demand imported for investments. In 2002 and 2003, import of country increased by 8% and 18%, respectively. That is, there are no significant changes and situations during two years. In 2004, the Koreans experienced important advances. Goings up by capital goods and raw material demand and by upward trends in oversea travelling and educations led to increases in import. In 2005, “total real imports increased by only 6.9 percent, affected by the reduced growth rates of those of raw materials for export use and capital goods”( Annual Report of Bank of Korean, 2005 ). In 2006, import of Korea had bigger volume than previous year. Because capital goods and consumer items demands grew, country had jump by 18%. Finally, import of country hadn’t more significant growth than previous year. Increasing import was 15%.
           Net Service Income
In 1999, there were no significant changes in a year but service provided abroad exceeded services provided to foreign countries. That is, net services income turned from surplus to deficit. In 2001, “the service balance posted a deficit similar to that of the previous year (Annual Report of Bank of Korean, 2001). In 2002, Korea had the biggest increase in deficit of net service income by 111%. Arising payments for overseas travel expenses and business services lead to increase services deficit. In 2003, deficit of Korea Service Income raised less and deficit fell down and narrowed with respect to previous year due to increasing in sea-cargo payments. In 2004, deficit of service income expanded approximately 8%. “Increase in outlays overseas travel, education abroad and business services, which greatly outweighed increased earnings from freight transportation resulted in increase of deficit” (Annual Report of Bank of Korean,2004). In 2005, service account deficit improved approximately 63%. Payments for education abroad, business services and overseas travel lead to move higher deficit. In 2006, this year deficit went up 38% in services account. To similarly previous year, this increase derived from payments for overseas travel, education abroad and outsourced business services. In 2007, there is no significant change as deficit increased 4% during 2006-2007 years.
     Net Interest Income
In 1999, there importantly was no change as net interest income changed downward average 8%. In 2001, “the interest income balance posted a deficit similar to that of the previous year (Annual Report of Bank of Korean, 2001). During 1999-2001 years, the country experienced deficit of interest income but it turned balance from deficit to surplus in 2002. Thanks to lower external interest payment, country had interest income surplus. In 2003, Korea had lower surplus of interest income but change rate was not important. In 2004, country experienced widely surplus. Net interest income raised 231% due to increased income from external interest payments and dividends. In 2005, “the income account shifted into deficit owing to the increased payments of dividends, which offset the rise in external interest income” (Annual Report of Bank of Korean, 2005). In 2006, country shifted income account into surplus again. This surplus derived from external interest income including increased payment of dividend and interest for overseas borrowings. Finally, in 2007, country has doubled surplus due to increasing external interest income like similarly previous year.
           Current Transfer Balance
During 1998-2003 there was no important change and stable in inflows of current transfer but outflows of currents transfer were widening in Korea owing to increases in unrequited remittances. That is, account had deficit which trended upward. In 2004, “the current transfers account deficit decreased owing to increased private sector’s remittances from abroad” (Annual Report of Bank of Korean, 2004). During 2005, 2006 and 2007 current transfers were volatile. While transfer balance deficit widened in 2006, it narrowed in 2007.

      2.2) Capital Account
     Foreign Direct Investment Balance
In 1999, FDI to Korea set new record. The amount was the highest one in Korean’s history. The Koreans were successful for investment of European countries and EU countries increased direct investment by 99.5. Also, local governments had highly efforts in order to increase investments. In 2000, foreign direct investment was similar and stable to 1999. In 2001, terrorist attack in USA had directly impact to investments. Direct Investment Balance fell down average 250% like before 1999. In 2002, foreign direct investment abroad increased while it declined in home country because LG Company made unusually large investment in Netherlands. In 2003, foreign direct investment balance was similar to previous year. In 2004, Korea approximately arrived success level of 1999 and FDI increased by 160% in home countries. According to Korean Ministry of Strategy and Finance (Weekly Report-November,2004), this increase was attributable to the steady increase of investment in China and the growing demand for overseas investment as major economies rebounded. Also, technical rebound brought outflow of investment. Finally, others years tended to be similar previous years but both inflows and outflows of investments dropped importantly.
     Foreign Portfolio Investment Balance
In 1999, Daewoo Group, a Korean Company, had troubles. After restructuring plan of Daewoo, long term market rates increased so sales of debt securities were on increase. Also, stock prices trended upward trended. According to Bank of Korean (1999), stock prices continued to move upward thanks to the inflow of the abundant market liquidity into the stock markets. In 2000, while inflows of debt securities increased, stock prices decreased so inflows of equities fell down importantly because of decreasing in investor expectations and oversupply of stocks with public offering in previous year. In 2001, stock prices was affected by September 11 devastation and outflows of stocks increased. Until 2004, balance of equity securities tended to be stable. In 2003, inflows of debt securities moved higher due to primarily to domestic and overseas expectations for an economic recovery. Until 2006, balance of debt securities tended to stable. In 2004, lower oil prices and reduction in call rate resulted lower stock prices and ensured outflows of equity securities. Generally, KOSPI (Korean Stock Price Index) had upward trend but Korean investors invested higher abroad so outflows of equity were higher than inflows. Finally, inflows of debt securities rose by 275% in 2007 as foreign banks purchases large scale Treasury bond and futures.
     Other Investment Balance
Fund flow of banking sector had importance in this item. In 1999, bank loans expanded steadily centering on small and medium enterprises, as bank made efforts to widen lending and lower interest rates in response to the inflow of funds (Annual Report of Bank of Korean, 1999). In 2000, Korean financial markets were sluggish and had contradiction so bank’s trust accounts, deposit-taking by investments banks and merchant banking corporations account decreased. In contrast, portfolios shifted out and credit-taking by Korean bank expanded. In 2001, deposit-taking by financial institutions was on increase due to secondary financial institutions including investment trust companies and bank’s trust companies. In 2002, deposit accounts were similar to previous year. In 2006, banks had especially big increase. This increase was approximately sevenfold. According to Annual Report of Bank of Korean, 2006), “banks owned to special sales campaigns offering high interest rates and hiked in deposit interest rates”. Similarly, this trend lasted in 2007.
In government item, government early paid borrowings from IMF in 2001.
In monetary authorities’ item, this is related to Korea and IMF relationship. As Korea had Asian Currency Crisis in 1997, IMF assisted to Korea so repayment increased in 1999 and 2001.
     Reserves
Korea has been surplus since 1998 as balance of payment of Korea had continuously surplus. Between 1999 and 2007, Bank of Korea used reserve funds only in 1999 and 2001. In 1999, the Bank supplied funds flexibly to stabilize the call market rate. In 2001, according to Bank of Korea (2001), “the government repaid the remainder of its borrowings from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) since the foreign exchange crisis ahead of schedule as its external repayment capacity had improved thanks to the building up of the foreign exchange reserves”.
3) Cross Sectional Analysis
Korea has continuously been current account surplus since 1997 so continuous surpluses had high factor in order to expand and stabilize their economy.
In 1999, Current account balance had surplus but import was on increase and this change reduced current account surplus with respect to 1998. Capital account increased importantly thanks to inflow of foreign direct investment, equity and debt securities. And this increase had huge impact in increasing overall balance.
In 2000, although export increased in parallel with import, net service income decreased significantly so current account balance declined. Capital account balance was similar to previous year so overall balance declined.
In 2001, current account surplus fell down as both import and export declined. Capital account also declined similarly due to decreasing foreign direct investment, repayment trade credit and early payment of government borrowing from IMF. Overall balance drop 76% since both capital account and current account had downward pressure.
In 2002, current account surplus narrowed due to sharp rise on deficit of net service income. Both direct investment and portfolio investment declined significantly but other investment which had huge soar ensured in order to stabilize overall balance with respect to previous year. And overall balance was similar to previous year.
In 2003, current account surplus expanded due to huge growth of export. And capital account surplus was like current account balance. Rises in debt securities resulted in expanding capital account surplus. Both current and capital account balances provided to increase overall balance account again.
In 2004, current account surplus widened more than 2003. Also, capital account surplus expanded more. And overall balance rose average 50% due to growth of export and increased foreign investment in home country.
In 2005, current account balance narrowed thanks to decreasing trade surplus and increasing service income deficit. Also, foreign direct investment and securities declined so highly but inflows of other investment increased but it was not enough to stabilize or expand overall balance so overall balance had significant downturn.
In 2006, current account balance narrowed more because trade balance fell and service income deficit increased. But capital account balance expanded. This was due to other investment including rise in overseas short-term borrowings by foreign banks.
Although other investments were average 700% on increase, overall balance was stabile.
In 2007, current account balance widened slightly. As export grow up and trade balance had soar, net service income deficit was enlarged. And capital account narrowed highly. This was due to “rise in repatriation of stock investment fund from Korea and Koreans' overseas stock investment (Annual Report of Bank of Korean, 2007) so overall balance fell down sharply.

Applied Behavioral Finance - Disposition Effect

Aim of this paper is to present one of biases of behavioral finance and a current example from ISE.

Disposition effect measures tendency of selling behavior as time. Investors behave differently to increase and decrease of price movements. For example, investors have tendency to hold in a decrease in contrast to sell in an increase. Especially, investors are more sensitive to decreases in prices because they believe to gain back of their losses.

According to Prospect Theory of Kahneman, theory of value function includes both concave and convex shapes. Positive area or gains are concave and losses are convex shaped. Investors thinks that decreased prices can be back to reference price so prefers to hold rather than selling like increased price.

Application of one stock

I observed buying-selling behavior related to disposition effect for DO-CO stock (DO-CO Restaurant) in a portfolio game. I bought DOCO when its price was 64 Turkish Liras. When ISE 100 index were decreasing, its price was increasing to 68,5 Turkish Liras so I sold this stock. In this stock, I faced disposition bias because of suddenly sale of stock.

ANIMAL SPIRITS - BOOK REVIEW ( HAYVANSAL GÜDÜLER - ÖZET ÇALIŞMASI )

This book importantly contributes to finance and economics by analyzing human behavior. With analyzing human behavior, “animal spirits” term is presented. This means that people are not rational in every economy when they decide. Economies are directed by animal spirits. For example, panics or confidence have big importance for economy. Animal spirits are contrary to supporter of followers of completely economic interests and perfectly competition markets. Aim of this book is to explain how animal spirits affects economy and why they are important for world economies. Authors emphasizes current global crisis together with animal spirits since they think that current crisis resulted from animal spirits. Also, they gives many experimental examples and facts that illustrates animal spirits

The book is divided into two parts. In first part, animal spirits are introduced and they are analyzed how they have effects in all economies. These animal spirits are confidence, fairness, corruption, money illusion and stories. In second part, some economic theories and current situations are examined by these five animal spirits.

Firstly, it is mentioned that confidence is very important concept for economies. It is based on foresight of future. When people have confidence, they become optimist and behave with irrational ways. In contrast, they are pessimist if they have lack of confidence. Also, confidence is affected by society. In a society, if there is a general confidence environment, others who cannot understand economy follows confidence environment. This creates optimism about future. Confident markets are bull markets. That is, since people are confident, their economic behaviors are with same positive way. In contrast, when they are not confident, markets are bear markets. Pessimism level is highly important. Panic and crisis even are stemmed from pessimism. A feature of confidence is irrationality. If people have confidence, they didn’t think enough with detailed way. Confidence environment is enough to make decisions. That is, they are irrational. Moreover, it is emphasized that confidence level directs GNP and move directly proportional. Their correlations can be measured by confidence indexes. This measures that changes in confidence level will be forward indicator of GNP and even confidence because consumers behave according to confidence and it will affect income and investment so new GNP will reflect confidence. After new GNP, confidence level will renew itself with respect to GNP numbers.

Secondly, fairness have important role in economic relations among people. Although traditional economics theory doesn’t care about fairness, it arranges goods and services prices, wages and salaries. In fact, prices are determined with respect to it. For example, price theory explains that prices should increase if there is an excess demand. But it is not easy because people comment this as opportunist attitude and doesn’t think fair. People usually want to find right and fairly make decision so it is invisible side of economy. So determiner of prices and wages mostly take into account fairness.

Thirdly, people are affected by corruptions in an economy. Corruptions such as accounting and credit fraud lead to market distortions and to even long term crisis. Primarily, this is stemmed from presence of limited companies. Since limited companies give limited responsibility and limited losses in situations of losses, managers make risky decisions and fraud so losses from these enterprises cause crises because stock investors are aware of situations of company after scandals. Also, people and governments have trouble in corruptions stemmed from credit firms such as Savings and Loan Institutions because these institutions make deposits from public resources and guarantee from government budget in case of losses. In short times ago, there were big three crisis including corruptions. These are Savings and Loans Institutions in 1991, Enron in 2001 and Subprime Mortgage Crisis in 2007. As results of these crises, corruptions substantially affected investor behaviors and so markets. Corruptions after Savings and Loans Institutions which give mortgage credits lead to decreasing prices in mortgage and markets. Also, After Enron scandal, investors escaped from financial markets. Generally, if markets faced with any corruption, this situation simultaneously affects financial markets and related sectors.

Fourthly, another animal spirit which affects investor behavior is money illusion. Money illusion means that investors behave differently from real values. That is, they tend to decide with respect to nominal values. And pricing and cost of goods is determined by nominal values. People have money illusion because of inflation. That is, people don’t take into account inflation in daily transactions. Inflation effect is hidden and invisible so wages contract, debt contract, and accounting interacts with inflation and its effects to money illusion. In wages contract, money illusion is related to COST (Cost of Living Adjustment) which means “automatic adjustment for inflation”. Labour unions don’t take into account COST even if inflation is higher when they bargain wages. And many new contracts don’t reflect inflation expectation. In debt contract, bond and mortgage credits are often adjusted fixed rate. They don’t simultaneously change with inflation so these rates remain unchanged if inflation rate and expectation change. In accounting contract, accounting transactions reflect business performance. If transactions reflect only nominal values and don’t reflect inflation accounting, numbers may be deceptive. That is, account transactions also can include money illusion.

Finally, telling stories is important psychological factor for economy. Psychologically if stories told increases in a speech, people have closer relationships and these stories strengthen existent relationships. And neurologically it becomes permanent in memory if stories in brain are told more. Stories are everywhere, even in economy. As similarly, stories have also big role over economy. Stories in economy tend to be herd behavior. Telling or creating a new story and/or exaggerate current story directs markets with respect to importance of story so social media and environment of financial market such as brokerage firms are significant part of stories. Moreover, confidence and stories have close relationships. Creating new story or exaggerating story is beneficial in order to build confidence environment. People buy or sell in market with respect to information stemmed from stories. That is, if a market consists of positive/bullish stories, people consume and invest more. For example, if a country like Turkey grows up while many countries are troubled with recession, markets creates and direct positive stories about future. In contrary, people hold their cash and forgo their investment if pessimist stories are spread. For example, if a sector is troubled or not profitable, stories related to this sector become damaging this sector so investors don’t invest this sector. In briefly, stories interact with confidence and herd behavior with respect to kind of information.

In book, there are six vital subject related to these animal spirits. These are big crisis, power of central bank, unemployment, a tradeoff between inflation and unemployment, savings plan and volatility of financial prices and corporate investments.

Firstly, two big depressions are explained by animal spirits. Firstly, 1890 depression crisis based on people’ panic behavior. In briefly, Panic behavior was derived from “Silver Purchase Act of 1890”. Because of this act, people thought that banknotes would decrease their values so they suddenly withdrew their money from banks. In fact, this crisis began with story animal spirit. They faced with important crisis in 1873 and 1884. They thought that this crisis expanded with parallel way like 1873 and 1884. And they remembered past experience and stories. Then, markets lost confidence environment based on remembering stories. Thus, people were in queue to withdraw deposits. After withdrawing deposits from banks, interest rates went up so many firms faced with bankruptcy. After stories and following confidence losses, markets were in crisis and affected private sector. Wholesale price indexes decreased, employer wanted to reflect decrease to their employee. But it was not easy with respect to fairness animal spirit. Because of disagreement in wages employees left their jobs. That is, applying rational wages theory was impossible. Instead of, fairness sense controlled markets. And there was a money illusion in this situation. Although wholesale price indexes decreases importantly and affected prices, employee couldn’t comprehend. Also, some frauds occurred together with starting crisis. That is, there were corruptions. In summarily, after an animal spirit which was story initiated crisis, others animal spirit including confidence, fairness, money illusion and corruption followed this through crisis. Secondly, 1930 big depression stemmed from overheating economies in 1920s. Overheating economy means that people have overconfidence and big growth expectations about future with respect to animal spirits theory. In this terms, people consume more and unnecessarily, and invest inefficiently. Briefly these years are qualified as years of high social welfare and stock markets were influenced so they had boom. Markets were like rally and were increasing consistently based on stories and confidence spirits. However, this rally terminated with second big depression and there were collapsed markets instead confidence environment. This depression stemmed from collapse in stock market and banking crisis with respect to rational economic theory. However, there were animal spirits deepening recession, that is, transformed into depression. These were fairness, money illusion and confidence. Employer had trouble with fairness sense like 1890 crisis although there was big depression. Employee still didn’t comprehend nominal and real values in discounts. Normally, there was a no problem in wages discounts if markets faced with big price decreases but they want to have labor right. Additional to fairness, changes deflation rate and wages rate show money illusions. That is, although there were no real changes in wages based on deflation, employers comprehended it as real. Also, there were losses of confidence among depression. After financial market collapses, people don’t consume and invest unlike 1920s confidence. These situations deemed crisis.

Secondly, Central Banks have important strength over markets. They interfere economy with monetary policy. They have two methods to affect monetary policy. These are open market transactions and rediscounting credits. Generally they benefit from open market transactions because rediscounting credits are only related to troubled banks. With open market transactions, main tool is interest rate because they buy and sell bond in order to money supply and demand. Their roles are vital because changes in money supply leads to changes to interest rate. And changes in asset prices are stemmed from changes in interest rate. That is, asset values are influenced by interest rate, and this also leads to changes in people’s income. However, their roles are narrow. In recession times, interest rates are altered with limited rates. For example, Central Banks are unsuccessful in order to decrease rates below zero. Instead of this, central bank should have different aim. With respect to this, central banks should be latest rescuer and intervener in order to be successful. And FED carried out in example of Bear and Sterns. Instead of bankruptcy of Bear Sterns, FED help to JP Morgan Chase acquire Bear and Sterns in order not to affect all markets. Because markets are integrated, bankruptcy of Bear and Sterns would influence market confidence. And depending to this, people had negative stories and confidence.

Thirdly, wages theory is compared by efficient wages theory (traditional) and animal spirits theory. Although efficiency wage theory often focuses on prices, animal spirit theory explains unemployment with fairness which is animal spirit. Efficiency wage theory states that efficiency of labor depends on prices. Additional to this, unemployment is determined by labour supply and demand with wages. If there is excess supply of labor, people who are more compatible to wages and other things are employed. That is, unemployment rate will be higher if excess supply of labor is more than excess demand. Also, they are laid off if they slack their job and they don’t be unemployed if they work harder according to Stiglitz and Saphiro. However, this is not such easy in real labor markets because these approaches are insensitive to human and workforce psychology. According to fairness animal spirits, wages are important and employees demand more wages if unemployment is lower. However, other factors also have important role in labor markets. Besides wages, employees want to be fair employer’s attitude. That is, they follow their right. If there is a lack of justice, it leads to important business problems. In contrast, if employers present claps of success to motivate employees, they will be more faithful and this leads to more efficient employees.

Fourthly, there is a reverse relation between inflation and unemployment. If zero inflation is targeted, policy makers agree more unemployment rate. Technically, Philips Curve reflects this correlation. Moreover, there is a tradeoff between them with respect to statistics. That is, people sometimes agree with inflation because of this trade off. However, important thing is money illusion and fairness between wages theory and inflation. According to animal spirit theory, people take into account only wages in situations of lower inflation. Employees don’t comprehend two factors in wages-inflation relationships. Firstly, employees never agree with wages cut even if there is big deflation like 1930 big depression. Also, according to fairness animal spirit, employers avoid wages cut in order not to affect employee’s efficiency because they work more aggressively. That is, as mentioned that money illusion and fairness interact. Secondly, they don’t realize relationship between more wages and higher inflation. If wages increases with lower rates in comparison of inflation, they think that their welfare will be more than current welfare. Also, labour unions take into account more wage increases if inflation is higher than normal. That is, if inflation increases abnormally, then they only think inflation effects and their welfare For example if there is a small inflation rate such as 3%, people are more happy about their employers for wages increases even if wages increases is 2%.

Moreover, savings plan are differentiated with respect to people arbitrary and differences among cultures. Many people don’t consider future and consume daily when savings plan is arbitrary. That is, they are unsuccessful in order to determine retirement plans. Credit cards encourage consuming and also people consume more than their needs. Therefore, government should interfere savings and retirement plans. There are two model cases and effects of animal spirits as example. Firstly, Singapore were successful with “Save More Campaign” and reached about 50% savings rate which is great rate by encouraging people to save more. Singapore was model for China. Like Singapore, China also accomplished with “Save More Campaign”. Reason of success is clear. Instead of individualism, social policies create herd behavior with following others and common confidence to success. Also, stories about Singapore success have effects over Chinese saving plan. These programs which animal spirits have important role brought success, especially to China. And higher savings rate became engine of growth. In contrast, all savings plan are arbitrary and there is no intervention of government to savings in USA so people are consumption crazy through credit cards. Accordingly, savings and retirement plan of different cultures are shaped through plans.

Finally, financial markets face with fluctuations in daily transactions. They are affected by mostly animal spirits. Firstly, financial markets increases and decreases depend on human psychology. If markets have bullish trend, people reacts this with buying stock. In contrast, if markets have bear markets, they sell their current positions. This is referred technically to feedback which means that “people react in same direction to past prices changes” according to authors. Feedback is important human behavior to affect all prices. This effect even leads to crisis because of it may create bubbles in stocks and assets. Also, this has importantly influences among markets. Thus, results from feedback create domino effect in markets. For example, stock exchange market or house prices increases with feedback effects. After prices raises, markets are dominated by another animal spirit, confidence. With confidence, people consume more. Economy faced with overheating trouble. After ceiling in prices, markets become reversed and move down. Together with decreasing prices, mortgages prices are also affected. People have problems because of repayment debt to banks so banks reduce credits, stops to finance projects and cannot fortify private sector with their finance. In briefly, only feedback effect in people can affect all markets. An important reason of current mortgage crisis stemmed from feedback. After housing prices boomed because of feedback and confidence about future, bubbles depend on increases collapsed with declining prices. Additional to feedback effect, petroleum market volatility are important because of correlation with other markets. Petroleum prices boomed in 1974 and 1979. These changes were originated from all speculations. Both extraordinary changes also derived from animal spirits. Negative stories about petroleum which contained scenario of boomed populations and scarcity of natural resources were spread among all markets. Secondly, corporate investments are mirror of total production because corporations direct future economic power of country. According to traditional theory, they invest depending on capital budgeting such as expected cash flows. In fact, these investments depend on management psychology and social psychology. Future is uncertain so they make decisions with irrational ways. That is, their investment decisions are intuitive instead of logic. Also, social psychology has influences over company because many decisions are made by board of director and department managers.

As a result, Animal Spirits which are confidence, fairness, corruption, money illusion and stories have big role over economy. Akerlof and Shiller exhibits that animal spirits are
invisible and markets are directed by them. Also, they are related to many subjects from unemployment to monetary policy. Economists should study them instead of explaining economy with incomprehensible

PİYASALARIN TAHMİNİ VE GÜNLÜK YATIRIMCILARIN DAVRANIŞLARI

4 Ocak 2011 ve 23 Ocak 2011 (http://halilkeklik.blogspot.com/2011/01/portfoyun-son-durumu.html ) tarihlerinde yazılarımda belirttiğim üç hissenin Cuma günü (07/10/2011) itibariyle kapanış fiyatları oldukça sevindiriciydi.

HİSSE / GİRİŞ TARİHİ / ALIŞ FİYATI / SON FİYATI / GETİRİ

CMBTN / 17.09.2010 / 27 / 51 / (+)88.9%
MRSHL / 31.10.2010 / 30.5 / 49.1 / (+)60.98%
GOODY / 31.10.2010 / 19.4 / 51.75 / (+)166.75%

Bu analizi yaparken toplam aktif büyüklüğü en yüksek on bankayı baz aldım. Bu verilere göre;
